LOTHIAN, MARYLAND – Southern Maryland FC’s U14 and U17 girls both picked up wins this past weekend as the U15’s won 4-2 over a strong SuperNova FC side and the U17’s tallied seven goals in a lopsided affair with Princeton.
Numerous storms across the east coast last weekend did not keep Maryland’s U14 girls from traveling to Carlisle, Pennsylvania to play Super Nova FC. But despite the team’s many early scoring opportunities, Maryland would not get their first goal until Desiree Bodziony beat the keeper nearing the end of the first half. On the goal, Bodziony collected a perfect through ball from teammate Taylor Morton, who earned an assist for her efforts.
The second half proved to be full of entertainment as the defensive strangle-hold wore off and the two clubs combined for five second-half goals.
After missing many chances in the first half, Katrina Savoy assisted on the second goal of the game, crossing to the feet of Lindsey Lane who would put the finishing touches on a goal that gave Southern Maryland a 2-0 lead.
It did not take long for Super Nova FC to start the comeback though, and they got their first goal of the game, a quarter of the way through the second frame to cut the score to 2-1.
Soon after Katrina Savoy and Alex Wetherholt both netted goals to squander any more come-from-behind ideas SuperNova may have had. With Southern Maryland holding a 4-1 lead, Super Nova FC scored late with a well placed free kick from just outside the box.
The win brings the U14’s record to 3-1. With nine points, Southern Maryland, playing out of Group C is in third place behind the Reading Rage and City Islanders Academy. The U14’s next match is on Saturday, June 21 against SuperNova. The match will be played at Southern Maryland’s home pitch – South River High School.
Southern Maryland’s U17 girls would have the same result, albeit on a larger scale, drowning Princeton Soccer with seven goals the following day. It took less than 30 seconds for Southern Maryland FC to get on the board with a goal coming from Michelle Grozinsky. She was assisted by Colleen Cain.
The goal set the pace of the match and Southern Maryland FC got three more first-half goals from Grozinsky, who would score one more plus add an assist, Stephanie Green and Kelsey Kempf. Becah Adams also tallied an assist. Christina Maldonado had 15 saves in net. The match ended 7-1 in favor of Southern Maryland who now hold three points and are in a three-way tie for fourth place in the Mid Atlantic Division. |
